Art Nouveau Vase In Gilded Bronze, Signed J. Ciberius – France circa 1900

A magnificent and imposing gilded bronze vase from the Art Nouveau period, made in France around 1900, featuring a remarkable naturalistic design inspired by aquatic flora and fauna. This elegant composition stands out for its slender silhouette and its supple, sinuous lines, characteristic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic and the refinement of the decorative arts of the Belle Époque. The body of the vase is richly adorned with a relief-carved design depicting lush aquatic vegetation, consisting of reeds, irises, long undulating leaves, and delicate wildflowers. The plant stems rise gracefully from the lower part of the vase, following its natural curves and creating a remarkable sense of movement and depth. On either side, two finely modeled birds with outstretched wings appear to be perched on the vase’s shoulders. Their presence lends a poetic dimension to the composition and reinforces its naturalistic inspiration. The openwork handles, with their organic and elegantly curved shapes, blend harmoniously with the vase’s silhouette. The piece as a whole demonstrates superb craftsmanship, particularly evident in the delicacy of the floral details, the modeling of the birds, and the fluidity of the lines. The luminous gilding subtly highlights the reliefs and underscores the richness of this decorative composition. The vase rests on a substantial, architecturally designed base made of veined red marble, whose deep colors contrast elegantly with the warm luster of the gilded bronze. The bronze base bears an engraved handwritten signature that reads “J. Ciberius Sculp.”, though the identity of the artist remains to be confirmed. A particularly elegant decorative piece, representative of the taste for nature and the excellence of the French decorative arts around 1900.
