An elegant pair of French candlesticks from the Empire period, crafted in gilded bronze and dating from the early 19th century. Each candlestick takes the refined form of an antique urn, adorned with finely chiseled friezes and flanked by two slender handles decorated with foliage motifs. The set rests on an architectural pedestal, embellished with remarkable gilded bronze female mascarons surrounded by radiant motifs of ancient inspiration. A particularly charming feature of this pair lies in its interchangeable upper elements: the pieces can be displayed either as candlesticks, with their candle holders, or topped with their gilded bronze flames, taking on the appearance of small decorative urns. A fine example of French Neoclassical taste during the Empire period, combining elegant proportions, the richness of gilded bronze, and a decorative vocabulary inspired by antiquity.
