A pair of French caryatid candlesticks from the Empire period (early 19th century), executed in the manner of Claude Galle. The supporting sculptures, crafted in dark brown patinated bronze, represent Roman vestals. They rest on cylindrical bases made of Rouge Griotte marble, which are mounted with finely chased rings and bases in ormolu (gilt bronze). On their heads, the figures carry tasseled cushions from which the cylindrical candle nozzles with palmette-decorated drip pans emerge. The excellent chasing points to leading Parisian bronze workshops. The ensemble is in authentic condition with age-appropriate patina and slight traces of corrosion on the gilding.
