A fine pair of Louis XV period armchairs "à la Reine* in molded and carved wood, featuring caned backs and seats, and stamped by Canot.
The model is elegant, distinguished by its shaped backrest, serpentine seat rail, sinuous armrests and supports, and cabriole legs ending in scroll feet.
The carved decoration, found on the top rail of the back and the seat rail, features a central flower flanked by small leaf motifs; the leg uprights are adorned with foliate friezes extending down toward the feet.
With harmonious proportions and construction, featuring well-set-back armrests and a comfortable seat, this pair exemplifies the high quality of Louis XV-era craftsmanship from Lyon. Stamped by Canot. Very similar to the work of Pierre Nogaret, they closely resemble another pair attributed to that artist which we also offer.

François Canot (c. 1721 – after 1758)
Master chair-maker in Lyon
Born in Paris around 1721, François Canot settled in Lyon around 1746. In 1748, he married Marie Muguet, the sister-in-law of the renowned chair-maker Pierre Nogaret.
He did not obtain his mastership in Lyon until 1758, reflecting a relatively late and eventful professional career.
Chairs bearing his stamp are extremely rare today, especially given that his output was far less prolific than that of his brother-in-law, Pierre Nogaret. Canot primarily produced chairs with flat backs and caned seats; his carving, both refined and original, fits perfectly within the tradition of 18th-century Lyonnais furniture.
His stamp is generally found on the rear rail of the seat frame. It consists of a small flower surmounting the inscription "CANOT," accompanied by the letter "S," referring to his work as a sculptor.
