A fine pair armchairs "à la Reine" of Louis XV period in molded and carved wood, featuring caned backs and seats, attributed to Pierre Nogaret.
An elegant model characterized by a shaped backrest, a serpentine seat rail, armrests (without arm pads) featuring sinuous "whiplash" supports, Cabriole legs terminating in acanthus leaves.
The carved decoration on the backrest rail elegantly depicts two flowers flanked by foliage; the back uprights feature acanthus leaf motifs, while the seat rail is centered on a single flower with dynamic petals, framed by a foliage frieze.
The leg uprights are adorned with foliage friezes that extend downwards toward the feet.
With harmonious proportions and construction, featuring well-cleared "whiplash" armrests and a comfortable seat, this pair exemplifies the high quality of Louis XV era chair making from Lyon.
Carved and molded wood, caning; restoration consistent with age and maintenance. Louis XV work from Lyon, attributed to Pierre Nogaret, a master chair-maker. Pierre Nogaret (1718–1771) was the most renowned chair-maker in Lyon during the reign of Louis XV.
Admitted as a master craftsman in Lyon in 1745 (likely after initial training in Paris), he produced a substantial body of work characterized by perfect, balanced, and elegant lines. His furniture is considered to be of "impeccable quality, recognizable at a single glance."
Work very similar to his can be found in the output of François Canot, his brother-in-law. As Nogaret was recognized as a master chair-maker, he served as an inspiration for several other craftsmen. Dimensions: H 96 cm x W 63 cm x D 52 cm
