An elegant 17th-century Dutch seascape depicting several ships sailing under the flag of the United Provinces on a calm sea. In the foreground, an imposing vessel viewed from the stern showcases the painter’s virtuosity in rendering the rigging, sails, and details of the ship’s structure. In the background, other ships enliven the horizon in a subtle atmospheric perspective.

The work is attributed to Willem van Diest, a specialist in nocturnal seascapes and harbor scenes who was active in The Hague in the mid-17th century. As an heir to the tradition of Jan Porcellis and the first great Dutch marine painters, Van Diest developed a refined style of painting, particularly appreciated for the precision of his ships and the luminous quality of his skies.

This composition is particularly captivating due to its remarkable technical mastery:
• exceptional finesse in the rendering of the masts and rigging,
• meticulous depiction of the fluttering flags,
• a very subtle atmospheric treatment of the marine light,
• delicate tonal variations in the reflections on the water,

The oak panel, composed of two antique planks, bears an old ground layer and inscriptions on the reverse. The quality of the support and the precision of the execution attest to particularly meticulous workshop craftsmanship.
