Pair of Early 19th Century Empire Gilt Bronze Candlesticks with Caryatids

A fine pair of Empire gilt bronze candlesticks, circa 1820, decorated with three female busts or caryatids with floral garlands in their hair. They rest on a finely chiseled shaft with latticework decoration, supported by three bare feet upon a circular base featuring an excellent beaded relief. The top is adorned with gadrooning and a Greek key frieze, while the rim of the removable wax pan matches the beaded edge of the base. Featuring intricate chasing and superb gilding, this pair is modeled after a design by Claude Galle (1758-1815) delivered to the Château de Fontainebleau in 1804.
