An impressive pair of Louis XVI style three-light wall sconces in chased and gilt bronze. The lower part of the backplate is decorated with a highly dimensional ram's head resting on a foliage arabesque. The upper part features an ivy-clad stem adorned with stylized Fontange ribbons and crowned with a pinecone finial. The three scrolled candle arms are richly decorated with foliage and eagle heads, terminating in nozzles with acanthus leaf motifs.
The rich decorative elements of this pair are strongly inspired by the designs of Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), one of the most prominent chaser-gilders of the Louis XVI period, who frequently employed ram and eagle head motifs, as well as Fontange ribbons in his work.
Condition: Good condition. Wear consistent with age and use, minor fading, newly varnished. Previous electrification has been removed, but the sconces can easily be re-wired upon request.
