Blessed Virgin - Southern Germany Circa 1480

15th-century depictions are quite rare. Many have been lost,destroyed, or are now in the protective care of museums orparish treasuries. Carved in relief from linden wood, polychromed and gilded, with a flattened backand a classically hollowed-out form, our depiction—likely showing Mary seated—is in theLate Gothic style and of high quality. The calm and dignified posture, the flowing and supple folds of the robe, andthe refined modeling of the head are characteristic of the art ofwood carving in southern Germany during the second half of the 15th century. Originally,this statue was undoubtedly part of an altarpiece or alarger sculptural ensemble. A pieceof museum quality. Condition: damaged and restored, woodworm holes, handsmissing. Dimensions: 62 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 25 cmdeep.
