The Nymph Amalthea and Her Goat After Pierre Julien (1731–1804)

An impressive and exceptionally large sculpture depicting the Nymph Amalthea with the young Zeus and her goat, after the celebrated model by French sculptor Pierre Julien (1731–1804).

According to Greek mythology, Amalthea cared for the infant Zeus in secrecy on the island of Crete, protecting him from his father Cronus. She is represented here beside the goat whose milk nourished the young god, creating an elegant and tender mythological composition.

The sculpture is executed with remarkable attention to detail, particularly visible in the graceful modelling of Amalthea, the naturalistic rendering of the goat and the richly worked drapery. Its monumental dimensions give the composition an imposing decorative presence.

The work is signed Barbedienne, referring to the renowned Parisian foundry Ferdinand Barbedienne, celebrated throughout the 19th century for producing high-quality editions of important works of sculpture.

A refined and highly decorative statement piece, particularly impressive due to its unusually large scale.
