In this work, Delphin Enjolras displays his full talent as a colourist and refined portrait painter. Delphin Enjolras
French painter and watercolourist Delphin Enjolras was born in Coucouron, in the Ardèche region, in 1865. He initially received a general education at the Notre-Dame-de-France boarding school in Le Puy-en-Velay, before turning to painting.
After moving to Paris, he entered the studio of Gaston Gérard and subsequently studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Gustave Courtois and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, major figures of late nineteenth-century academic painting.
From the late 1880s onwards, Enjolras exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he presented portraits and interior scenes. In 1889, he received an honourable mention, and in 1901 he became a member of the Salon. He also participated in several regional exhibitions, notably in Nîmes and Avignon, where he lived for part of his life.

His work focuses primarily on the female figure, often depicted in intimate interiors illuminated by the glow of a lamp or candle. These carefully composed scenes reveal his constant fascination with the effects of light and the transparency of fabrics.
Enjolras excelled in capturing reflections on skin, silk and glass, earning him a reputation as a “painter of reflections.”
His models - young women reading, sewing, writing or preparing themselves before a mirror - embody a gentle and contemplative femininity, far removed from ostentation. In these works, Enjolras combines the realism inherited from Dagnan-Bouveret with the decorative elegance characteristic of the Belle Époque.


His mastery of a variety of techniques -oil, watercolour and pastel -further enhances the delicacy of his chromatic harmonies and the subtle sensuality of his treatment of light.
