This popular model was also produced in marble and bronze, won a medal for sculpture at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris. The work was subsequently acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, where it became part of the museum's collection.
The present example is executed in patinated terracotta and is presented on its original tall black fluted pedestal with rotating display platform, allowing the sculpture to be admired from every angle.
