By the Lopes Brothers, Palermo, second half of the 19th century.
Beautifully executed circular specimen marble top, intricately inlaid with a striking geometric and floral composition. The richly coloured stones appear to include Nero Portoro, Verde Antico, Giallo Siena, Rosso Levanto and Sicilian red jasper, arranged in elaborate concentric bands.
The original paper label beneath the top identifies the celebrated Lopes Brothers' workshop, located at Corso Vittorio Emanuele 14 in Palermo. Renowned for their exceptional marble and mosaic work, the Lopes family was active throughout the 19th century and received several awards at exhibitions.
Comparable marble tops by Salvatore and Filippo Lopes have been sold at Sotheby's and Christie's in London.
