The marble sculpture depicts Hebe, the young cupbearer of the gods, caught in the act of feeding Zeus' eagle. The female figure is seated with elegant naturalness on a rock, her body wrapped in soft drapery that follows her anatomy without stiffening it. Her gesture is measured and affectionate: her hand stretched out towards the bird of prey establishes a silent dialogue, while the other holds a small vase, alluding to the nectar of Olympus. The eagle, symbol of divine sovereignty, does not appear threatening but docile, participating in an intimate scene that humanises the myth. The work is fully in keeping with a late 19th-century sensibility that looks to the classical world as a repertoire of harmony and ideal beauty, reinterpreting it with a sentimental and lyrical vein. The author, Aristide Fontana, was the protagonist of an artistic career marked by a constant dialogue with the neoclassical tradition and romantic influences. The son of the sculptor Fernando Fontana, he received an education based on the cult of pure form and balance, looking in particular to Canova's models. His career developed between Italy and England: after his marriage to Emma Bowkett, celebrated in London in 1871, he settled for a period in Carrara, a key centre for marble working, where his son Cesare was born. In the following years, Fontana returned to Great Britain, participating regularly in international exhibitions. He presented works in important Italian exhibitions, including an exhibition in 1880 and the Italian General Exhibition in Turin in 1884, where his sculpture Princess of Wales was featured. At the same time, he exhibited several times at the Royal Academy between 1881 and 1885, presenting female subjects and portraits that confirmed his preference for elegant classicism, tempered by a modern sensibility. The sculpture in question effectively summarises this journey: a work that combines formal rigour and narrative grace, capable of restoring an intimate and poetic dimension to the myth, in line with the ideal of serene beauty pursued by Fontana throughout his career.
