Monumental Carrara Marble Sculpture – Italy, circa 1920
An exceptionally large and beautifully carved Carrara marble sculpture by Italian sculptor Attilio Fagioli (1877–1966), entitled Meditazione.
The sculpture depicts an elegant young woman seated beside her lyre, absorbed in a moment of quiet contemplation. Her serene expression and graceful pose give the composition an intimate, poetic character, while the lyre evokes music, inspiration and the classical tradition.
Particularly striking is the sophisticated contrast in the treatment of the marble. The delicately polished figure, with her softly modelled features and flowing drapery, emerges from areas of intentionally rough-hewn Carrara marble. This interplay between smooth and unfinished surfaces creates remarkable depth and gives the sculpture a strong artistic presence.
Standing 82 cm high, Meditazione is an unusually large and impressive example of Fagioli’s work. The sculpture rests on an elegant pink marble base, providing a refined contrast with the white Carrara marble.
Signed “A. Fagioli” and inscribed “Meditazione” on the base.
