Large "Verdure with Birds" Tapestry
Flanders, Oudenaarde, 17th Century
A large, magnificent wool and silk tapestry from a Flemish manufactory, characteristic of Oudenaarde production during the second half of the 17th century (Louis XIV period).
The central panel depicts a wooded landscape with great depth, rendered in shades of blue, green, and ochre typical of Flemish *verdure* tapestries. In the foreground, amidst richly detailed low-growing vegetation, two large birds (pheasants or wading birds) come to life.
This tapestry is particularly distinguished by its exceptionally rich and wide original border in an architectural Baroque style, featuring an elaborate decorative scheme:
Top: A central cartouche enclosing a profile bust in the antique style.
Sides: Two medallions featuring mythological figures, including a delicate Cupid with a bow on the right side.
Bottom: A masterful composition featuring two imposing *putti* (cherubs) supporting a central blue-ground escutcheon depicting two figures, all crowned by a Baroque shell motif.
Corners: Four large circular medallions containing overflowing baskets of flowers.
This monumental piece, with highly desirable dimensions (2.45 m wide by 3.40 m high), offers an exceptional decorative presence and remarkably well-preserved original colors. It is ideal for a prestigious interior, a grand drawing room, or a collection of fine antique textiles. Specifications:
