A very rare marble double lion column finial. This sculpture was not meant to support – high above a column - the structure of a building as it does not have a flat supporting surface but clearly to be seen and, therefore, must have had an important symbolical meaning. It would have been at eye-level on a column or balustrade in an impressive building (church or palazzo). The double lion can be symbol of both the secular and ecclesiastical authority and the fact that they face in the opposite direction might indicate that they have to keep each other in balance. Was it near a throne as part of jurisdictional context?
North or central Italy, 13th century. Wear consistent with its age and tiny losses, one crack in the base but otherwise in very good condition. Metal (lead) pin sticking out that had to attach it to the supporting column. Unique piece of art and history. Good size.
Dimensions: 57x23x23cm.
