A refined pair of large polychrome terracotta vases with oriental depictions.
Chinoiserie became widespread starting in the late 17th century, but enjoyed its heyday during the following century. They were initially created as wall decorations, often for which painted papers from the East were imported directly and then incorporated into wall coverings. Excellent examples are the Great Hall of the Royal Palace of Stupinigi and the Royal Castle of Racconigi, where a series of rooms are decorated with high-quality papers and furnished with vases and other furnishings in the same style.
