Offered by Franck Baptiste Provence
Important overmantel mirror in cream-lacquered linden wood for the paneling and gilded wood for the carved decoration. The violin-shaped frame is composed of interlaced floral scrolls; it is framed by uprights with acanthus clasps treated in a rooster's comb pattern.
The upper rail features a polylobed reserve framed by interlaced scrolls.
At the top, it displays a stylized shell, and at the bottom, an openwork acanthus clasps the rear border, along with outstretched bird wings.
The reserve serves as a frame for a large oil painting on canvas depicting wading birds, notably flamingos.
It is inspired by the works of the painter François Desportes (1661-1743).
High-quality carving combining finesse and dynamism.
Original gold leaf gilding.
Presented in its original condition, in need of cleaning and restoration.
Provence, lower Rhône Valley, Regency or early Louis XV period, circa 1720-1730.

Height: 219 cm; Width: 135 cm
Our opinion:
The abundance and vibrancy of the decoration on this overmantel mirror are characteristic of the finest workshops in the Rhône Valley; the presence of pink flamingos, true symbols of the Camargue region, is quite rare on this type of overmantel mirror and likely resulted from a specific request by the patron.
