Louis XIII Marquetry Mirror – 17th Century

A large, magnificent Louis XIII mirror featuring an inverted profile and marquetry made from native woods (walnut, sycamore, etc.), dating to the 17th century.
The various wood species and shades elegantly highlight the lavish ornamentation: flowers, foliage, arabesques, and "dancing" putti adorning two sides.
The heart-shaped corner pieces feature rich acanthus leaf motifs.
Also notable is the frieze on the outer molding, which alternates between light and dark woods.
The central molding—crafted from ebonized wood and enhanced by an interlacing frieze and light-wood corner accents—frames the mercury-backed mirror, creating an elegant contrast with the shimmering, rich colors of the floral and foliate decoration.
Original parquet backing and mercury-backed mirror plate.
