THE ARTIST

The “Flemish School” is a broad term that encompasses painters and sculptors working in the Southern Netherlands from the late Middle Ages through the Baroque period. Artists from this region were renowned for their technical refinement, meticulous detail, and ability to blend religious subjects with a strong sense of naturalism. Flemish artists were particularly skilled at adapting and reinterpreting Italian Renaissance compositions for local tastes, ensuring their influence reached far across Europe.

This work reflects such a tradition. It is based on Raphael’s celebrated Holy Family of 1518, but executed in the Southern Netherlands. Flemish artists often created versions ‘after’ Italian masters, combining the prestige of famous models with their own distinctive craftsmanship.

THE ARTWORK

The composition derives from Raphael’s Holy Family (Louvre, Paris), which was originally commissioned by Pope Leo X as a diplomatic gift to Queen Claude of France, wife of Francis I. Though signed by Raphael, much of the execution was delegated to his workshop, a common practice in large commissions of the time.

The central figures are the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Joseph, accompanied here by Saint Elizabeth, the infant John the Baptist, and two angels. This subject became increasingly popular in European art from the late 15th century onwards, reflecting a more intimate and human vision of sacred figures.

The Virgin and Child: Mary is depicted as a young mother, tenderly holding her son, who is shown in active interaction with the surrounding figures.

Saint Joseph: traditionally portrayed as an older, protective figure, Joseph underscores the earthly, familial side of Christ’s life.

Saint Elizabeth and John the Baptist: Elizabeth is the cousin of Mary and mother of John. She emphasizes the extended holy kinship. John the Baptist as a child is often shown with a reed cross, symbolizing his role as the prophet who foretold Christ’s mission.

Angels: the two angels reinforce the divine protection of the scene, embodying the presence of God’s grace. Their inclusion represents the connection between heaven and earth, blending intimacy with celestial grandeur.

The composition is both devotional and dynastic: as a gift to Francis I, the Holy Family symbolized piety, divine blessing, and the sacred foundations of royal authority. By owning such a painting, Francis aligned himself with both the Catholic Church and the flourishing culture of the Italian Renaissance.
