Neo-Gothic mantel garniture in gilt and silvered bronze

Exceptional Neo-Gothic mantel garniture in gilt and silvered bronze with enamels – French School, 19th century

A remarkable mantel garniture of outstanding craftsmanship, composed of a central clock and its pair of candelabra, executed in richly chased bronze enhanced by a dual gilt and silvered patina.

Strongly inspired by the Neo-Gothic style, the ensemble displays a sophisticated architectural design directly drawn from the 19th-century medieval revival. Slender pinnacles, trilobed arches, openwork tracery, and foliate motifs elegantly evoke the ornamental vocabulary of Gothic architecture, in a spirit akin to the creations promoted by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and the French historicist movement.

The clock, particularly refined in its design, features an enamel dial with blue Roman numerals, set within a richly ornamented framework. The base is adorned with polychrome enamel cartouches depicting relief profiles, inspired by Renaissance models, reflecting the eclectic taste characteristic of the Second Empire.

The five-light candelabra, of great elegance, echo this formal vocabulary with remarkable coherence. Their finely chased arms, enhanced with decorative chains and architectural elements, demonstrate exceptional metalworking craftsmanship.

A noteworthy feature: each enamel cartouche is unique, presenting a variety of profiles and decorative motifs, lending the ensemble a distinctive and precious character.

Through the quality of its chasing, the richness of its materials, and the sophistication of its design, this garniture belongs to the production of the great Parisian bronziers of the second half of the 19th century, within the movement of decorative arts encouraged under the Second Empire.
