18th & 19th centuries clocks and furntures
Probably Austrian or Italian work, 19th century
Rare and elegant pair of finely chased and gilt bronze candlesticks, presenting a particularly theatrical and ornamental composition of Neoclassical inspiration.
Each piece rests on a tripod base ending in powerful lion’s claws, a traditional symbol of strength and sovereignty. The uprights are formed by three back-to-back eagles, with vigorous modeling and stylized wings, evoking the imperial iconography inherited from Roman Antiquity and widely adopted in the decorative arts of Central Europe in the 19th century.
The central stem is punctuated by an important faceted pine cone. In ancient symbolic repertory, the pine cone refers to fertility, eternity, and spiritual rebirth. Here it forms a major sculptural element, treated with remarkable precision in the chasing.
The upper part opens into a true sheaf of finely chased and veined leaves, arranged around the candle socket. At the end of each leaf are suspended cut pendants, animating the whole through effects of light and transparency, creating a precious effect in a spirit reminiscent of certain lighting pieces.
The ensemble captivates through the great richness of its decorative vocabulary: palmettes, engraved friezes, stylized foliage, and Antique-inspired motifs compose a refined architecture of remarkable balance.
Very fine quality of casting and chasing, with numerous details finished with the chasing tool, giving depth and liveliness to the reliefs. The luminous and deep gilding elegantly highlights the ornamental richness of these pieces and testifies to work of great quality.
