Furniture, works of art and paintings
A pair of corner cabinets in mahogany and mahogany veneer, each opening with one drawer and two shelves.
The fluted uprights rest on four legs, including three turned (toupie) feet. Each cabinet is topped with a white Carrara marble slab forming a right angle, in contrast to the wider angle of the case.
The finely chased gilt bronze mounts include a heart-shaped gallery on the first shelf and an applied gallery on the drawer, framed by a beaded frieze. An elegant alternation of fluting and water-leaf motifs can be observed.
Stamped G. DESTer.
Godefroy Dester, master in 1774.
Louis XVI period, original marble.
Dimensions: H. 83 x W. 70 x D. 56 cm
These corner cabinets come from the Château de Dampierre, owned by the House of Luynes for over 400 years. They were commissioned at the time by Louis-Joseph-Charles-Amable d'Albert de Luynes.
Dester established his workshop on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where his activity is documented until 1790. Despite limited archival information, the large number of signed pieces attests to the success and popularity of his workshop, as well as to his genuine talent.
Godefroy Dester’s production is marked by great refinement: Louis XV commodes adorned with Chinese lacquer, “bonheurs-du-jour” in Transition style marquetry, and Louis XVI furniture with highly personal characteristics, most often in mahogany with floral marquetry. His work is distinguished by its purity of line, with ornamentation primarily consisting of fluting and fine gilt bronze mouldings.
