Attributed to the workshop of Claude Galle (1759-1815).
Pair of finely chased bronze mercury-gilt torches, Empire period, circa 1810. The slender, slightly tapered shafts are richly adorned with finely chased foliate motifs in vertical flutes, punctuated by rings decorated with guilloche and rosettes. The elegant bases rest on a circular pedestal adorned with palmettes and classical motifs, executed with great finesse of chasing. The original mercury gilding presents a subtle contrast between matt and burnished surfaces, characteristic of high quality Parisian production of the early 19th century.
