Animated Winter Landscape with Skaters by Johann Vollerdt (1708–1769)

Animated Winter Landscape with Skaters, oil on copper, dimensions: 24 x 32 cm; with frame: 45 x 53 cm, by Johann Vollerdt (1708–1769).

This winter scene, painted on copper, depicts a lively snow-covered village, typical of the Northern European tradition of the 18th century. In the foreground, several figures move about near a substantial building with a tower and arched gateway. Tall, leafless trees structure the composition and enhance the wintry atmosphere.

At the center, a frozen river or pond hosts numerous skaters, while a stone bridge leads toward a town dominated by steeples and snow-covered rooftops. The whole is rendered with the meticulous precision characteristic of Vollerdt: detailed architecture, animated figures, and cool yet luminous tones.

Johann Christian Vollerdt, active in Dresden, is known for landscapes inspired by Dutch painting, often enlivened with small figures. Features present in this painting include:

Copper support, frequently used by Vollerdt to achieve fine detail
A light, slightly silvery palette, typical of his winter scenes
A composition with depth, incorporating a path, bridge, and distant village
Numerous figures engaged in activity (skating, walking, conversing)
Slender trees with finely rendered branches, a recurring stylistic signature

Vollerdt belongs to the generation of Saxon painters influenced by 17th-century Dutch masters (such as Aert van der Neer, Jan van Goyen, etc.). His winter landscapes are sought after for:

their narrative quality
their delicacy of execution
their poetic atmosphere
and the precision of detail made possible by the copper support.
