This exceptional convertible writing desk, made at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, represents a monumental garden entrance, supported by fluted columns and surmounted by a pediment, with urns and an oculus pierced by a garland of flowers.
A woman's bust dominates this architectural element. In front, a pair of large covered pots, still within the ornamental garden style, replicate large outdoor vases and are also adorned with garlands of flowers.
The whole rests on a stylized, naturalistic terraced base, decorated with scrolls and flowers. Seated beneath the arch, a putto holds the quills in his hands while writing, and a trough on the back of the desk serves to store them. On either side of the putto are the two vases, whose lids are in fact reversible candlesticks; they slide open to reveal the inkwells. This principle of organizing the writing desk's components is also characteristic of travel objects; the small reversible candlesticks could also serve as lighting independent of writing, for example, in an inn room.
Although somewhat naive in its details, the overall design and decorative vocabulary of this writing desk possess a charming elegance, reminiscent, for instance, of landscape or place views in silver or pen drawing from the same period.
Technically, it's worth noting, for example, that the candlesticks and vases are mounted in two halves, which is clearly visible in the photograph. This construction is typical of the Ancien Régime.
