Attributed to Christofle & Cie, Paris France, circa 1875 An impressive monumental gilt bronze centerpiece of exceptional quality, attributed to Christofle & Cie, Paris, dating from the late 19th century. The composition features two finely sculpted putti standing at either end of the base, each elegantly supporting the central basket. The figures carry floral staffs across their shoulders, lending the piece a graceful and playful classical character. The openwork basket is richly decorated with finely chased ornament, including interlaced borders, beaded moldings and scrolling foliage. Ram’s-head mounts form the elegant handles of the vessel, while the shaped base rests on paw feet and is centered by a medallion with a monogram. The superb chasing and rich gilding reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Parisian house of Christofle, one of the most prestigious producers of luxury tableware and decorative bronzes of the 19th century. Comparable examples of this model have appeared on the art market, including a related example sold at Christie’s, confirming the importance and desirability of this monumental centerpiece design. With its impressive scale and refined classical decoration, this centerpiece was conceived as the focal point of a grand dining table in a distinguished 19th-century interior.
