European Works of Art from the Middle Ages to the XVIIIth century
Beautiful panel depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, holding the Child on his left arm and lilies in his right hand, following the traditional iconography of the Saint. The scene is framed by an elegant border of rocaille motifs and floral lambrequins, characteristic of the third quarter of the 18th century.
Composed of 6 × 4 tiles measuring 21 × 21 cm, several pieces show old restorations due to the usual breakages resulting from the delicate removal of ceramic panels from their original setting, whether used as cladding for interior or exterior walls. The panel is mounted in an old wooden frame.
A comparable example is the panel with the same theme preserved in the González-Martí National Museum of Ceramics in Valencia (PÉREZ GUILLÉN, I. V. Pintura Cerámica Religiosa: paneles de azulejos y placas., MNCASGM, 2006, fig. 13, p. 123).
Dimensions: 137 x 96 cm, frame included
Condition: Restorations on several tiles, all tiles being original.
Provenance: Private Collection, Valencia.
