A Fine Japanese Edo Period Jingasa Depicting the Hosokawa Family Crest Japan, circa 1750 This rare and well-preserved jingasa (military camp hat) is made of wood or black lacquered leather, decorated with two interlocking gilt circles, representing the mon (emblem) of the powerful Hosokawa family—one of the most influential daimyo families and landowners in Japan during the Edo period. The minimalist elegance of this headgear reflects both its practical function—protection from the sun and rain—and its symbolic dimension, asserting clan identity and loyalty on the battlefield and in ceremonial processions.
