A Chinese blue and white ‘dragon’ vase, Shunzhi period (1644-1661)

Finely potted with a pear-shaped body rising from a short straight foot to a tall, waisted neck, surmounted by a bulbous knob, terminating in a cylindrical mouth. The body painted in rich tones of underglaze blue with two large, animated four-clawed dragons contesting a flaming pearl, writhing amongst stylised cloud and flame motifs. The dragons boldly rendered with sinuous scaly bodies, powerful clawed limbs and fierce expressiond, their heads turned sharply backwards. The knob is decorated with further scrolling cloud motifs, while the upper neck is encircled by a band of upright pointed lappets beneath double-line borders.
