A set of four marble marquetry plaques, Grand Tour period
Comprising four square plaques finely executed in marble marquetry, displaying a variety of geometric compositions, including checkerboard patterns and radiating motifs. Each plaque is assembled from carefully selected marbles of contrasting colours and veining, framed within marble borders.
Such plaques were typically acquired by travellers during the Grand Tour as souvenirs of Italy, reflecting a fascination with classical antiquity and Renaissance decorative arts. Intended as collector’s objects, they were often displayed in cabinets or incorporated into furniture or architectural settings.
Italy, Grand Tour period, 18th–early 19th century.
