This rare 16th-century casket is constructed from wood, covered in leather, and reinforced with finely wrought iron mounts. The exterior is richly adorned with hand-forged iron straps, hinges, and an elaborate front lock plate, displaying characteristic Renaissance decorative motifs. The robust ironwork not only served a protective function but also reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with Spanish chests of the period.
The surface shows a deep, dark patina with visible wear, losses, and abrasions consistent with centuries of use, contributing to its strong historical character. The interior has been repainted in a vivid red, a modification most likely dating from the 19th century, a practice commonly undertaken to refresh or stabilize older storage chests.
Such caskets were typically used for the safekeeping of valuables, documents, or textiles and were often portable. This example stands as an evocative survival of early modern craftsmanship, combining utility, durability, and decorative ambition.
