Offered by Herwig Simons Fine Arts
A remarkable late 17th century iron padlock, distinguished by its imposing form and finely rendered macaron depicting a knight. The robust iron body retrains the character and traces of age expected of an exceptional historical lock, while the sculptural decoration gives the object a particularly striking presence.
The lock is opened by a concealed mechanism, with the keyhole discreetly positioned on the reverse.
This secret opening mechanism adds element of ingenuity and mystery to an already unusual highly decorative object.
Provenance: Henry René d'Allemagne (1863-1950) renowed French historian and collector of locks, keys, and locksmithing objects.
