Collection of four brass portable sundials with compasses
Augsburg, Germany – 18th century
Rare and refined collection of four octagonal brass portable sundials, each incorporating a magnetic compass, produced in Augsburg, one of Europe’s leading centers for scientific instrument making during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The instruments are finely engraved with multiple hour scales, folding gnomons, and carefully executed compass roses. The surfaces are richly decorated with geometric and foliate motifs, characteristic of high-quality Augsburg craftsmanship.
The reverse sides bear engraved inscriptions, including makers’ signatures such as Johann Schretteger of Augsburg, confirming their authenticity and origin. The group is accompanied by two original leather cases, showing an attractive, timeworn patina.
Such portable sundials were prized objects in the Age of Enlightenment, serving both practical timekeeping purposes and as symbols of scientific knowledge and status for travelers and scholars.
Condition:
Overall good condition, with wear and patina consistent with age. Engravings remain legible and moving elements are preserved.
A rare and decorative ensemble, highly desirable for collectors of antique scientific instruments.
