Kidney-shaped Table By François Linke (1855–1946)

An important kidney-shaped writing table, made by François Linke, one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers of the late 19th century. The piece is crafted from fine mahogany and richly adorned with finely chased and gilded bronze mounts, demonstrating exceptional workmanship. The top is covered in leather, framed by an elegant gilt bronze gallery that emphasizes the table's fluid, asymmetrical lines. The frieze incorporates three discreetly concealed drawers, perfectly integrated into the curve of the top. The whole rests on four slender, cabriole legs, adorned with gilt bronze mounts and sabots, lending balance and refinement to the composition. This table perfectly illustrates François Linke's characteristic style, in which Louis XV inspiration is reinterpreted with exceptional structural rigor and quality of execution. This aesthetic language, both decorative and refined, brought Linke international renown at the turn of the century. Born in Bohemia, François Linke settled in Paris around 1880, where he founded his workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the historic heart of Parisian cabinetmaking. From 1900, he opened a prestigious showroom at 26 Place Vendôme, solidifying his status among the leading manufacturers of luxury furniture. Linke achieved major recognition at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition, where his creations, combining technical virtuosity and a bold interpretation of the Rococo style, were a resounding success. He won a gold medal and attracted a prestigious international clientele. In 1906, he was awarded the Legion of Honour, definitively establishing his career. Today, François Linke's works are held in numerous public and private collections and are among the most sought-after examples of French cabinetmaking from this period. Dimensions: Width 104 cm – Height 75 cm – Depth 55 cm
