Small marble group depicting a scene with putti and lions alternating in the round, Italian Renaissance, 16th century.
In 16th-century Renaissance sculpture, the pairing of a putto with a lion symbolizes the power of virtue or grace overcoming brute force. The cherub, a symbol of innocence, youth, and spirituality, is paired with a lion, which represents strength, courage, or even lust. This juxtaposition creates an allegory that suggests the ability of innocence to control or mitigate more primitive instincts, or the victory of grace and ingenuity over physical strength.
The Renaissance saw a rich production of small-scale sculptures, primarily intended for private devotion, for furnishing prestigious homes (such as the Medici studioli), and for collectors. The small group in our possession is a rare testimony to an era strongly linked to symbolism, in which each work was intended to convey ethical and moral teachings connected to the cultural context of its time.
