Jean-Baptiste-Claude SÉNÉ (1747–1803)
Master menuisier en siège (chairmaker), received his maîtrise on 10 May 1769.
Alongside Georges Jacob, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené is regarded as the greatest French seat-maker of the Louis XVI reign.
Known both for his prolific output and for the enduring renown of his work, he was the eldest son of the menuisier Claude I Sené, and soon established himself as the most famous Parisian chairmaker of his lineage. From his workshop on rue de Cléry, at the sign of the “Gros Chapelet”, his talent quickly attracted great attention.
In the early years of his career, Séné worked mainly for private clients, to whom he delivered Louis XVI seats of pure, elegant, and perfectly proportioned but classical design.
From 1785 to 1791, he was, together with Jean-Baptiste Boulard, one of the regular suppliers of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne.
He then received prestigious commissions for the châteaux of Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Compiègne, producing seats of the finest quality for the King, the Queen, and several members of the royal family. For the most elaborate orders, he often collaborated with Boulard.
