Painter / Gilder: Pierre-Théodore Buteux (active 1765–1780)
France, circa 1770–1780
Cup height: 6.6 cm; Saucer diameter: 16.2 cm
This Sèvres hard-paste porcelain cup and saucer is decorated overall with a warm iron-red ground and finely gilt borders. The conical cup, with gilded foot and rim, features a central motif of an elegant flower basket filled with roses, peonies, and violets. The composition is symmetrically flanked by ribbons, bows, and golden tassels, framed below by a garland of entwined foliage. The overall design reflects the ornate elegance of the late Rococo style while embracing the order and balance of early Neoclassicism.
The center of the saucer displays a naturalistic floral bouquet, surrounded by scrollwork and fruit basket motifs in purple, enriched with fine gilding. The gilded details are precise and well-proportioned.
The set is in very good condition.
