Large ceramic vase, Fujimura Hoshu (1903–1970), Japan circa 1950-60
Made by Fujimura Hoshu (1903–1970), one of the leading artisans of modern Kutani ceramics, it demonstrates a search for balance between ornamental tradition and contemporary expressiveness.
The background, dominated by deep tones of blue and green, brings the surface to life while serving as a backdrop for a stylized hydrangea, raised motif, against which large birds in flight stand out, in cream-on-cream paste outlined with a pearly gray border. Gold enlightened Brilliant, in a purely decorative language of rare coherence.
Its maker, Fujimura Hoshu, trained in Kanazawa, is one of the few. He was regularly selected there between 1947 and 1965, a period during which he developed a personal style that was at once refined, bold, and deeply rooted in Japanese decorative aesthetics.
This vase thus stands out as a collector's item, but also as an unique interior design object. Rooted in tradition, yet open to new forms of visual expression.
