Sèvres manufactory, circa 1805
This two-handled cup and matching saucer are made of hard-paste porcelain and finished with a rare fond Nankin ground, a yellowish-grey glaze developed by the Sèvres manufactory in imitation of Chinese porcelain. The surfaces are decorated in brown monochrome (camaïeu brun) with finely rendered rocky and wooded landscapes. Gilded accents highlight the rim, handles, and foot.
The piece reflects a synthesis of oriental inspiration and neoclassical order typical of the Empire period.
Dimensions:
Cup height: 7.9 cm; diameter: 8.3 cm
Saucer diameter: 17 cm
Minor wear to the gilding along the edges; overall in very good condition.
