An exceptionally fine and rare pair of French Empire candelabra, crafted in patinated and fire-gilt bronze. Each candelabrum is modelled as a dancing putto, poised gracefully atop a gilt sphere resting on a cylindrical column with spiral-engraved decoration. The figures wear stylised Roman helmets and ornate, tasseled girdles in an exotic style characteristic of the Empire’s fascination with antiquity and the Orient.
Each putto supports two torch-form candle branches, richly ornamented with classical female masks and acanthus motifs. The bobeches (drip pans) are finely chased with lotus and palmette designs. The contrast between the dark patina and the lustrous gilding enhances the sculptural quality and theatrical presence of the composition.
The allegorical theme of ‘L’Amour Triomphant’—Love in triumph—was a popular subject in Napoleonic decorative arts, blending classical symbolism with romantic idealism. The remarkable casting, intricate chiselling, and high-quality gilding suggest the hand of a skilled Parisian bronzier, possibly from the ateliers of Claude Galle or Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
