An exceptionally refined desk by the Parisian firm Durand & Fils, executed in the Louis XV style and demonstrating an outstanding level of craftsmanship and material quality.
The piece is crafted from richly veneered wood, featuring a carefully composed marquetry pattern that creates a warm and vibrant surface. The gently shaped top follows the elegant contours of the base and is framed by a finely chiselled gilt-bronze border.
The front is fitted with three subtly curved drawers, each adorned with finely cast gilt-bronze mounts depicting rocaille and floral motifs. This refined ornamentation continues along the corners and the gracefully curved cabriole legs, terminating in finely detailed sabots. The interior of the drawers and the overall construction reflect a high degree of cabinetmaking precision.
The desk is stamped “Durand & Fils” (multiple times), firmly identifying it as the work of Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand (1839–1920), a leading Parisian cabinetmaker renowned for his high-quality interpretations of 18th-century furniture. His workshop gained international recognition and was awarded at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, where his work was praised for its stylistic authenticity and technical excellence.
Active during the Belle Époque, works by Durand & Fils are generally dated circa 1880–1900.
Combining elegance, functionality, and historical significance, this desk represents a distinguished addition to a refined interior or an important collection.
