Henri IV called "the Great" born in Pau in 1553 is king of France since 1589. Our portrait is from this period because the king is still young without white hair, nor white hairs in his beard as on most of his portraits.
François Bunel le Jeune is the son of François Bunel he was born around 1552 and he died around 1592. An act of 1583 gives him the title of painter and valet of the king of Navarre. This act mentions that he painted three oil paintings for the king's brother.
