Son of the animal sculptor Auguste Cain (1821-1894), Georges Cain (1853-1919) was a student of the painters Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Georges Vibert, but he remained very influenced by his third master Édouard Detaille (1848-1912).
He made his debut at the 1878 Salon with his painting "Fumeur" in the Louis XV style. His works, mainly devoted to genre scenes, historical and military scenes, were regularly exhibited at the Salon until 1900.
Painter and writer, Georges Cain (1856-1919) was the first curator of the Carnavalet Museum - History of Paris, for 17 years.
