Auguste Joseph Girard de La Brely was born on February 26, 1838 in Fuissé, near Mâcon.

He entered the studio of Charles Gleyre at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1863 to 1890. He began by sending genre scenes before devoting himself from 1878 to the almost exclusive realization of portraits.

He also exhibited at the Salon de Lyon from 1864 to 1904. Our portrait could be the one presented at the Salon de Lyon in 1901 under number 120 and simply titled Portrait.
