Painted in 1876 and signed "Galiani," this landscape belongs to the early years of Eugène Galien-Laloue's (1854-1941) career. Born in Paris, the painter developed an early interest in landscapes and scenes of daily life, before becoming famous for his views of Paris during the Belle Époque. He used several pseudonyms throughout his career, including E. Galiani, an Italianized form of his name.

This early work testifies to his precocious interest in nature and rural landscapes. A church with a slender steeple stands out in the center of the composition, surrounded by lush vegetation and bordered by a stream. The artist constructs the scene around a powerful contrast between the dark masses of the foreground and the diffuse light that envelops the sky and the distant landscape.

The painting reveals a sensibility still close to the 19th-century French landscape tradition, with particular attention paid to the effects of light and atmosphere. Galien-Laloue would, in fact, dedicate a significant portion of his work to rural landscapes, notably in Normandy and Seine-et-Marne, alongside his celebrated Parisian scenes.

The year 1876 marked an important moment in the young painter's career: he presented his first work that year, before making his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1877. This canvas, painted under the pseudonym "Galiani" thus offers a particularly interesting glimpse into his early artistic work, well before the elegant Parisian street scenes that would bring him renown.
