Pug figurine - Chinese porcelain, Jiaqing period (1796–1820)

Reclining Pekingese figurine in Chinese bisque porcelain with naturalistic black-and-white decoration. The left front paw is extended, the ears are long and drooping, the muzzle has a serene expression, the fur is finely painted in black and gray, and the tail is flattened.

Jiaqing period (1796–1820).

Condition: Left front paw reattached.

The Pug is of Chinese origin and has been known for over 3,000 years. Native to the Gullin region north of Canton, it was formerly known as the “lion dog” and was presented to imperial figures and the court (the Pug being considered a precious hybrid of the dog and the lion).
