Writing desk, Louis XV
Wood and bronze, 74 x 162 x 82 cm
The bureau plat, which originated in France during the 18th century, embodies the spirit of the Louis XV style, which transformed furniture during the middle decades of the century from simple utilitarian objects into living sculptures. The writing desk presented here rests on four cabriole legs with soft, sinuous profiles that taper downwards and terminate in gilt-bronze sabots featuring rocaille motifs. The rectangular top is lined in reddish-brown leather with small-tool gold tooling and framed by a chased bronze border with vegetal patterns, featuring scrollwork corner mounts (cantonali) that protect the corners.
Beneath the top are three drawers with contoured profiles, decorated with panels (riserve) of exotic woods enhanced by delicate light-colored stringing that follows their contours. The gilt-bronze handles, shaped as asymmetrical leaves and scrolls, are paired with escutcheons seamlessly integrated into the design. The sides and upper leg shoulders are likewise adorned with high-quality gilt-bronze mounts that accentuate the piece's structural lines.
The Louis XV style, which developed between 1723 and 1774, rejected the geometric rigidity of the previous century in favor of curved lines, asymmetry, and lightness. In writing furniture, this pursuit resulted in a rare balance between functionality and aesthetic pleasure: master cabinetmaking—featuring veneers and marquetry of various woods—combined with the bronze caster’s art, creating surfaces rich in highlights and dramatic visual impact. Designed to be admired from every angle, the bureau plat perfectly expresses this ambition. It is no surprise that the finest surviving examples are housed today in major institutions: from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, from the Palace of Versailles to the personal desk of the President of the Italian Republic at the Quirinal Palace, underscoring an enduring appeal that transcends centuries.
