Jules-Bertrand Gélibert (1834 - 1916) – Duck Hunting Scene

Jules-Bertrand Gélibert was the son of the painter Paul-Jean-Pierre Gélibert and Charlotte Dorothée, known as Caroline Artigala. His brother, Gaston Gélibert, was also a painter.
A student of his father and Bernard Griffoul-Dorval, he began exhibiting at the Salon in 1859.
In 1861, he married Marie Félicité Pelleport in Paris.
He received an honorable mention in 1861, a third-class medal in 1869, and a second-class medal in 1883.
He served as president of the dog show held at the Orangerie exhibitions from 1890 to 1912.
He won bronze medals at both the 1889 and 1900 World's Fairs.

Among his famous hunting paintings, a work from 1875 titled *Hallali de cerf dans les mares de Belle Croix* (Stag at Bay in the Belle Croix Ponds), set in the Forest of Fontainebleau, drew particular attention. Critics admired "the vigor of the drawing and color, the sense of movement, and the keenness of observation."

An avid fan of mounted hunting, he followed the Rallye Sivry pack in Fontainebleau and the Bois Boudran hunt with Count Greffulhe, as well as the hunts organized by Baron de Lassus. At the initiative of the Société Centrale Canine (Central Canine Society)—presided over by the Prince of Wagram—the *Salon des peintres et sculpteurs de chasse et de vénerie* (Salon of Hunting and Venery Painters and Sculptors) was founded in 1890, with Jules-Bertrand Gélibert serving as its president. The event was held annually from 1890 to 1912 in the Orangerie of the Tuileries Garden. In addition to museum collections (in New York, London, Paris, Bagnères, Cambrai, Saint-Étienne, and Tarbes), paintings by Jules-Bertrand Gélibert can also be found today in numerous French châteaux and private residences (such as those of the Murat, Wagram, and Carayon-Latour families).
While based in Capbreton, he decorated the walls of the Church of Saint-Nicolas in 1889 with monumental paintings that are now listed in the General Inventory of French Cultural Heritage. His brother continued the work starting in 1895.
He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1905.
He died in Capbreton at the age of 81.
A street in Capbreton is named Rue des Frères Gélibert.
